Barbara Neis (Ph. D.) est professeure et chercheuse au département de sociologie et chercheuse en chef au SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research de l’Université Memorial. Mme Neis est membre de la Société royale du Canada et a été présidente, en 2012, de l’Association canadienne de la recherche en santé et sécurité au travail. Elle a été nommée lauréate de la Fondation Trudeau de 2006 à 2009. Elle a obtenu un doctorat en sociologie de l’Université de Toronto en 1988. Ses recherches portent essentiellement sur les interactions entre le travail, l’environnement, la santé et les collectivités rurales et éloignées. Elle a fait des recherches sur de nombreux aspects de l’industrie des pêches à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, dont le travail des hommes et des femmes dans le secteur des pêches, l’asthme professionnel des crabiers, l’ergonomie participative et la sécurité des bateaux de pêche. Ses responsabilités actuelles sont : directrice du projet On the Move: Employment-Related Geographical Mobility in the Canadian Context, qui bénéfice d’une subvention de partenariat de sept ans octroyée par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH); cochercheuse, responsable de thèmes et membre du comité de gestion de la recherche au sein du Marine, Environmental, Observation, Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) des réseaux de centres d’excellence; et coprésidente du Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy du réseau de Terre-Neuve, qui est financé par le CRSH.

Barbara Neis (Ph.D.) is a University Research Professor in the Department of Sociology and Senior Research Associated in the SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research at Memorial University. Professor Neis is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and President (2012) of the Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health. She was a Trudeau Foundation Fellow between 2006 and 2009. Professor Neis received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto in 1988. Her research focuses broadly on interactions between work, environment, health and communities in rural and remote contexts. She has researched many aspects of the Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries including gender and fisheries, occupational asthma to snow crab, participatory ergonomics, and fishing vessel safety. Her current research responsibilities include acting as Project Director on a 7-year Partnership grant from SSHRC entitled On the Move: Employment-Related Geographical Mobility in the Canadian Context, co-investigator, theme co-lead and member of the Research Management Committee of the Marine, Environmental, Observation, Prediction and Response Network of Centres of Excellence, and co-chair of the Newfoundland node of the SSHRC-funded Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy.
